The Jima Falls were declared a natural monument in August 2009 in order to preserve and recognize its great importance to the water and the biodiversity of the area. Around the natural monument of the Saltos de Jima we can find a great variety of native plants such as figs, ciguas, sablitos, male ferns, ceibas and espatodeas.
As for the fauna of the area, there is an enormous diversity of animal species, mainly birds, such as the cigua constance, the barrancolí, the bobo bird, the parakeets, among others. There are also amphibians and reptiles typical of the rain forest in this area.
Although only Salto I and Salto II are currently available for visits, there are several hiking organizations that organize hiking activities around these impressive waterfalls, offering a unique walk through an area full of exotic flora and fauna.
On the outskirts of the city of Bonao we find the Jima River, famous for the natural monument of the Saltos de Jima. The Jima River rises in the Las Neblinas scientific reserve and flows into the Camú River, and it is between these two points that we find the impressive waterfalls of the Saltos de Jima.
