Rincón Dam is located 1.5 kilometers south of the town of Rincón, province of La Vega, 15 kilometers southwest of the municipality of La Vega, and 130 kilometers from Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic.
It was inaugurated on May 1, 1978, at a cost of 24.3 million dollars, and financed with resources from the Dominican Government. The study of the dam and the construction supervision were carried out by Hansón and Rodríguez. The Rincón Dam has multiple purposes; among them, water for human consumption, irrigation for agriculture, production of electrical energy and fishing. Its greatest influence is in irrigation for agriculture, in the Yuna basin, where it irrigates 118,199 tasks of
land with 1,457 users.
The source of supply for the Rincón dam is the Jima River, a tributary of the Camu River, which, in turn, is a tributary of the Yuma River, the main source of rainfall in the northwestern part of the country. The main tributaries of the Jima river are the Jatubey, La Hormiga and Jayaco rivers. The Rincón dam reservoir has an area of 6.9 km2, with a total volume of 75.5 million m3, of which 17.5 are considered dead reservoirs. Its dam is a solid concrete gravity curtain structure, with a maximum height from the foundation of 54 meters and a length of 185 meters.
During its construction, 174,500 m3 of concrete were poured. The spillway is of the free crest type, with a maximum capacity of 500 m3/sec. It is located on the same Rincón dam, in blocks 9 and 10, coinciding with the riverbed. The pressure tunnel is 171.11 meters long and 3.50 meters in diameter, with a design flow of 29.20 m3/sec. The bottom drain is lined with steel and is operated with two valves: one butterfly type and the other hollow jet. With a maximum flow of 55 m3/sec., a floor level at the entrance of 83.50 meters above sea level, a diameter of 1.20 meters and a length of 54.67 meters.
The reservoir, which dams the waters of the Jima River, the main tributary of the Camú River, is located 18 kilometers north of the city of Bonao, capital of Monseñor Nouel province.
