The Ebony Green Scientific Reserve is located in Arroyazo, an area northeast of Constanza on the road that descends from Jarabacoa, this scientific reserve has altitudes that range from 245 to 1,565 meters high. The waters produced in this Scientific Reserve supply the city of La Vega and the Taveras and Rincón dams.
It is home to more than 600 species of flora and fauna, including more than 100 species of birds, giant tree frogs, lizards, and more than 80 species of orchids. These species thrive in one of the most humid areas of the country, and a place where several rivers are born.
The reserve owes its name to an endemic tree found only in this area of broadleaf cloud forest: the green ebony (Magnolia pallenscens), which produces valuable wood. Scientists often come to this protected area to conduct studies, while visitors interested in hiking excursions can do so by prior arrangement.
The Fernando Domínguez Visitor Center, run by Fundación Ébano Verde, has a museum where you can review the different types of wildlife species that live in the reserve, before starting to walk through its grounds.
The Ébano Verde Scientific Reserve is a protected area known for its biological diversity, and the high endemism of its flora and fauna. The Baño de Nubes/Caribbean Birding Trail runs 5 kilometers and provides signs with information about the birds in each of the different environments along the route. While the Sendero al Centro La Sal is a demanding stretch along its 10km. The trail passes through the Loma la Golondrina hillside.
