The Hermanas Mirabal Province is a wonderful place in the Caribbean and is the cradle and home of the butterflies: Patria, Minerva and María Teresa, three great heroines of the Dominican Republic, who are symbols of freedom throughout the world. These three sisters were born in the town of Ojo de Agua in the municipality of Salcedo.
Hermanas Mirabal is one of the 32 provinces of the Dominican Republic located in the center-north of the country. It limits to the north and west with the Espaillat province, to the east with the Duarte province and to the south with La Vega.
It is a land of hard-working, cheerful and hospitable people, whose inhabitants are proud to bear the name of the immortal butterflies as a province. And it is that, in memory of the heroines, on November 20, 2007, by presidential decree, the Salcedo province was officially renamed the Mirabal Sisters.
With regard to commemorating today, November 25, the International Day of Non-Violence against Women, a date that was declared in 2000 by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), and the 60th anniversary of the physical disappearance of our heroines Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, we spoke with Yasmín De La Cruz, in charge of the culture department of the Mayor’s Office of Salcedo.
About the historical value that this town has for its inhabitants. “Knowing that our province bears the name of the Mirabal sisters, women who marked a space in history, not only in our town, but in our country and the world, makes us feel very proud to bear their name in our name,” De La Cruz said.
Long before this town, previously known as Salcedo province, received the name of Hermanas Mirabal province, we already had a significant flow of tourists who came to learn about our history, to visit the House Museum, to inquire about the lives of those valuable women. which was talked about so much through documentaries, films and other projects that were promoted in the province”, said the cultural manager.
Over time, this small town has managed to become a cultural reference that fills all Dominicans with pride. This province is distinguished by its great contribution to cultural, national and international development, because apart from the beautiful landscape that distinguishes it and the warmth of its inhabitants, it has numerous attractions that honor the eternal butterflies such as:
- The Amphitheater
- The Forest of Women
- The Route of the Butterflies: it is an event carried out with the purpose that hundreds of Dominicans and foreigners know the places that were visited by Patria, Minerva
and María Teresa Mirabal before she died). - The Murals Route: which emerged in 2006 as one of the activities of the Mirabal Sisters Cultural Festival, whose objective is the preservation, promotion and
promotion of artistic expressions and cultural values of the province. - The Ecopark: a space full of natural resources that allows you to enjoy yourself in a familiar and welcoming environment.
- The House Museum: is a place that was his upbringing residence and in which personal objects are preserved that today have a historical and intangible value for our country.
This wonderful province has so many beautiful things to show the world and its people make this beautiful corner of the Dominican Republic one of the most special.
that falls in love with warmth and the love that is breathed.
