Valle Nuevo National Park

Valle Nuevo National Park is known for offering exceptional opportunities for bird watching and mountain hiking, Valle Nuevo is one of the jewels in the crown of Constanza.

After the exit to the Aguas Blancas waterfall, the path climbs to a plateau on top of a mountain, at an altitude of more than 2,200 meters, where you will be surrounded by tall pines and green ebony trees.

This protected area, known as “Madre de las Aguas” or mother of water sources, has multiple rivers that supply the country, with temperatures ranging between 14°C and 22°C, in December, they can drop below from scratch, with frost and even ice at times.

It is characterized by hosting a vegetation typical of the Neoarctic ecozone. Valle Nuevo arose after the melting of the glacier that occupied the Cordillera Central during the Last Glacial Maximum; upon the arrival of the Spaniards, the area was covered with shallow lakes, according to accounts by the Spanish chronicler Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo.

The biodiversity of Valle Nuevo is astounding: with an extension of 902 square kilometers, the park encompasses cloud forests, mountainous plains and vast savannahs of alpine grass embraced by rocky mountains, it is home to more than 500 species of plants, of which 138 are endemic to Valle Nuevo, as well as numerous species of amphibians, reptiles, butterflies and birds.

This cold and mountainous, remote and lush landscape cannot be seen anywhere else in the country, with endless opportunities to get closer to nature: hikes, horseback rides or bike rides around the Creole pines and near the peaks covered in mist.

In the midst of this landscape is a paradise with a unique climatic environment, the only one to offer very cold climates for a Caribbean country with a fixed sun, this place is something out of the ordinary.
